Homework Post #4

Homework #4

Dear Third Graders and Families,

Welcome back from Thanksgiving Break! We hope you all had a very happy holiday. We are so proud of your work and we encourage you to continue to put your best effort. Remember to plan out your homework throughout the next two weeks so are you are not rushing to finish it all in one night! If you need help with this, please let us know. For this month, homework may appear to be a bit smaller, as some nights students will be required to take home their writing folder (which will always be returned the following day) so that they may work on any pieces. We are trying to reach our goal of publishing our next pieces by the holiday break. If you have any questions or concerns about the homework, please be sure to tell us as soon as possible so we may help you! Enjoy!
Best,
Marissa & Alice

* For Art this Thursday, please bring a copy of your favorite book to school.  You will need it during your time with Bernard.

Homework is Due FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13th.

Part 2)

Identifying Types of Sentences
In grammar you learned about the four different types of sentences: Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative (Command), and Exclamatory.
Please identify the sentences below by writing the correct type of sentence it is.

1. Please don’t go! __________________
2. Meet me at the town square. _________________
3. Green is my favorite color. __________________
4. Respond immediately._______________

6. Please don’t go! ________________
7. July 4th is Independence Day. _________________
8. Is it snowing? ________________
9. Hawaii is a tropical climate.________________
10. Hurray, I past the math test! ___________________

Please make sure to write a book review if you have finished a book. Your book review may appear on our class homework website!

Book Corner

Dominic
by Sylvie Liss

The book Dominic, by William Steig, is a beautiful book which weaves perfectly with the beautiful artwork. It follows the adventures of an outgoing dog with a pure heart. The book made me sad at times and laugh at others. Almost at once he encounters a troop of villains, named the Doomsday Gang, who have been stealing and doing worse for miles around. He is infuriated and desires to put the gang to justice, but not to hurt them. He comes across many animals who have been robbed by the Doomsday Gang. I recommend this book for any age, boys or girls, because my father read it to me at a very young age and I still loved it again at the age of 8 and 1/2 years old. In a clash of the past, present, and future, Steig has written another amazing book.

Diary of A Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck
by Henry Turner

If you think you're a regular person and you are not weird, well then you are wrong. Everybody is weird in their own way but some people are just a bit more weird. If you think you are weird, then meet Greg Heafly. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid Hard Luck, by Jeff Kinney, Greg is having some hard times. He keeps on having to do all these bold and weird things! You will also feel bad for him at the end of the book. My favorite part is when Greg finds his mom's stash of things. For example, he found a bunch of the same stuffed animals what Greg had as a kid. Whenever he would lose the stuffed animal, every morning he would wake up and find a new stuffed animal that looked exactly the same as the one he lost! What HARD LUCK!

Math

Part 1) Counting Money
Please count the money below. Be sure to show all of your work in the math section of your homework notebook.

Part 2) Elapsed Time
Complete this homework in the math section of your homework notebook. Figure out how much time has passed from the start time to the end time.
Part 3) Multiplication
Please complete the table below in your math notebook.
Commutative Property= changing the order of the factors does not change the product.
 Example:  4 x 8 = 32      8 x 4 = 32

Part 4) Word Problems
In the math section of your math notebook, be sure to prove your work with evidence for each problem. Remember, mathematicians prove their thinking using a variety of strategies, models, words and equations. Don't forget to include the unit (what does the number represent) after writing down your final answer.

1) There are 4 wheels on a car.  How many wheels are on 5 cars?

2) There are 2 wings on a bird.  How many wings are on 6 birds?

3) There are 10 dimes in a dollar.  How many dimes are in 4 dollars?

4) There are 7 days in a week.  How many days are in 2 weeks?

5) There are 6 muffins in a box.  How many muffins are in 5 boxes?

6) There are 8 legs on a spider.  How many legs are in 3 spiders?

The Book Corner

Here are a couple reviews by your classmates! Check them out and maybe you'll be interested in reading the same book!

Little House on the Prairie
By Elizabeth Newman

The book Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder is about a girl named Laura. She lives in an Indian territory in Kansas. She has neighbors named Mr. and Mrs. Scott and Mr. Edwards. There are many dangerous things on the prairie like Indians, sicknesses, and prairie fires. One night, there is even an Indian jamboree and no one can sleep! They have mostly a good life on the prairie. But then they have to leave the Indian territory after all of their hard work. Find out what happens!

Middle School: The Worst Years of my Life
by Christian Lebron

If your in middle school now, or will be soon, this story could help you. This book will make you leave your house laughing, feeling surprised, or leaving saying, "oh no!" This is a book where a boy is trying to break all rules in HVMS (Hills Village Middle School). My favorite part is when he gets arrested for doing graffiti. He spelt his name, Rafe, but he writes his name so it is disguised into..."Rules Aren't For Everyone". It's my favorite part because a lot of action begins from there. Even when you're at the end of the book big things happen!

When you finish a book during your two weeks, be sure to write a summary in your homework notebook under the ELA tab. Maybe yours will be featured in the next homework assignment!

Math

Marissa & Alice were roaming the school on Friday afternoon. As they were doing so, they noticed some equal groups around the school and classroom. In the pictures below, use your most efficient strategies to figure out how many items in each picture. Make sure to show your work in your homework notebook under the math tab, and to represent the problem using a multiplication equation.

Example:

4 groups of 5 ->    4 x 5 = 20

1. How many book bins in all?

 2. What is the total number of mailboxes shown?

 3. How many tiles are on the wall outside the boy's bathroom?

4. If there are two hooks per cubby, how many hooks are there in all?

CHALLENGE:
5.   If there are 30 students in Marissa and Alice's class, how many cubbies will they need to hang up 30 coats? (Remember, there are 2 hooks per cubby)

World Investigations

                             Wonderopolis

                                             http://wonderopolis.org/wonder/who-invented-time/

Have you ever wondered the many ways we can measure time? For instance, right now we've moved into autumn, just 60 days ago we were living summer! Time is measured in many ways and measurement is a theme we will be studying in Science in the weeks to come. This week in Wonderopolis you will read " Who Invented Time?" After you have completed the questions in
"Did You Get It?" turn to your World Investigation section in your notebook and answer this question any way you'd like.  What does time mean to you?
You may answer it in paragraph form or you may be creative and answer it in a graphic novel format
or comic strip! Like the example below (although this is only one frame yours should be more! )
Have fun and remember  that no matter what the format be mindful of  spelling,  punctuation, and capitalization ! Have Fun!

Question: What does time mean to you?

2) Choose five words from the list below that you find most interesting. Write the word and its definition. Then write a sentence for each word you choose.
  • axis
  • future
  • present
  • past
  • revolve
  • rotation
  • measurement
  • dimension
  • inherent
