Dear Third Graders and Families,
We had a wonderful time reading your persuasive writing pieces from the last homework assignment. Remember to plan out your homework over the next two weeks. We will be handing out a planning sheet for those of you who would like one.
Remember, we expect your personal best on all assignments you turn in. Also, it is your job, as a student, to come to us with any questions you may have before the homework is due.

Part 1
* Read at least 35 minutes each day and log!
Continue to stretch your non-fiction reading muscle by choosing a non-fiction book in addition to your fiction book.
*Choose 2 of the following 3 prompts to answer in your ELA section.
Each persuasive piece should be at least 1 page.
1. Should schools make students wear school uniforms or not wear uniforms?
2. What is the best season of the year?
3. Should we get more books for our classroom library?
Write a persuasive piece in which you give at least 3 reasons for whichever stance you choose. Things to Remember:
-Your audience (Who are you trying to convince?)
-What can you anticipate your audience thinking?
-3 reasons with explanations
Part 2
Underline the part of the sentence that will make a contraction.
Re-write the entire sentence using the contraction.
Pay close attention to capitalization, spelling and punctuation.
ex) I am very hungry! --> I'm very hungry!
1) Patty does not want to go home.
2) I know they could not go out today.
3) We will go to the movies together.
4) He did not do his chores yet.
5) I will see you tomorrow!

2) Leah measured the perimeter of a pentagon. The total perimeter 55 inches. What is the length of each side of the pentagon?
3) Seven children are building toy cars. They have 35 toy wheels to share equally. How many toy wheels will each child get?
4) There are 32 desks in the classroom. The teacher puts them in groups of 4. How many groups of desks are in the classroom?
5) Six friends are given a pack of baseball cards to share equally. The pack contains 36 cards. How many cards should each person get?
6) A pet shop has 8 cats. Each cat had an equal number of kittens. The total number of kittens was 32. How many kittens did each cat have?
7) Tracy collects animal stickers. She has 158 stickers in her collection. On her birthday, her mother gave her 64 more stickers to add to her collection. How many animal stickers does Jung have now?
8) Jim needs 130 pennies for his collection. He has already collecting 67 pennies. How many more pennies will Jim need to finish his collection?
9) Kelly can fit 150 pictures in her photo album. Each page can hold 10 pictures. Kelly has already filled up 8 pages. How many more pictures can Kelly put into her photo album?
10) Patrick bought some paint sets and one paintbrush. The paint sets cost $10 each and the paint brush cost $4. What is the most number of paint sets Patrick can buy if he paid a total cost is $68?
World Investigations
In social studies, we have been talking about how stories, legends, and myths are passed down through cultures. Read the Wonderopolis about Groundhog's Day, "Who is Punxsutawney Phil?", and answer the three questions below.
